Advanced Arm Dynamics is Philadelphia’s newest prosthetics company offering top-of-the line, highly functional artificial limbs. Retired Army Sgt. Ramon Padilla who lost his left forearm in Afghanistan, now has the ability to lift heavy items or catch a ball with his new hand. Colby Helffrich who lost all fingers, but a thumb on his left hand can do the same.
Metro Philadelphia:
The prosthetics company has already constructed bionic limbs for 14,000 patients at its other clinics throughout the country. But the futuristic body parts don’t come cheap. Hands like Padilla’s can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 depending on features and abilities. The current generation of prosthetics rely on muscles to send messages to the artificial limb.
The hands are controlled by the electric signals transmitted from the contraction of the muscles that are still in tact. They are programmed with different functions that are controlled mentally. Pretty cool, huh?
